Architecture
Graffiti is often perceived as an illegal, degenerative act that signifies an area in decline. However, in truth it represents a community of highly skilled artists who have honed their craft for self expression, effectively using architecture as a canvas to make their voices heard. While commissioned street art thrives under city funding, the potential of graffiti artists is severely underlooked. This project argues for the virtue of graffiti, allowing visitors to adorn the walls and windows of specific gallery spaces with their art. By involving visitors in the process of art-making, The Sudbury Community Art Gallery blurs the lines between a traditional white-box art gallery and the communal gallery of the street. Essentially, it justifies graffiti as a practice in the realm of fine art by allowing it to overtake a traditional gallery context.
