Cerro de Pasco
“Tierra de machos y no de muchos.” Cerro de Pasco is the land of the tough but the few. At 4380m above sea level, this mining capital is one of the highest cities on the planet. It is also extensively polluted with toxic mineral waste. Manmade mountains of discarded mine material and glowing red tailings ponds border the city, and at its center lies a vast open pit mine that is slowly eating the town from the inside out.
